The BookMaker software necessary to create these books is Windows only, and can be downloaded from the company's Web site (It doesn't require the Internet again until you order your book. Though they don't feel as permanent as the hard-bound books, we think these smaller versions would make great gifts for friends or family after a party or holiday gathering, and the price is right. Their covers are glossy card-stock borders with a cut-out square in the middle, which reveals the first photograph. Physically, the smaller books are floppier, more casual and much lighter to carry around. For our test, we used digital photos I took a couple of weeks ago at one of America's true shrines, Fenway Park in Boston, during the season home opener for the Red Sox. In recent days, my assistant Katie Boehret and I have been trying out BookMaker and the new softcover photo books. The program also can create the costlier hardcover books. The company has introduced a very nice, free software program, called BookMaker, that makes it easy to lay out the books to your taste and order them instantly online. The company thinks the price will be competitive with turning digital photos into traditional, individual snapshots, and that consumers will be attracted to the idea of getting a bound book instead. Each book also carries a $4.95 shipping charge the hardcover books cost $7.95 to ship. These 6- by 8-inch books cost about a third of the price of the 8- by 12-inch hardback books and hold twice as many pages _ $9.95 for 20 pages and 49 cents for each additional page. Now, MyPublisher has launched a new, even lower-price version of the custom photo book that it hopes will make the product much more popular: smaller softcover photo books, still printed on thick glossy paper and still professionally bound.
